Configure a switch port

Example: enable a port

Replace GigabitEthernet0/1 with the port name on your switch:

enable
configure terminal
interface GigabitEthernet0/1
description Connected-device
no shutdown
end
show interface GigabitEthernet0/1 status

Use the port type and number shown by your device. Port names can differ by model.

Tips

Practice in Packet Tracer or a private lab first.
Check the port name before you configure it.
Use description to remember what is connected to the port.
no shutdown enables a port that was administratively disabled.
Check the port with show interface status and the link lights.
Do not enable unused ports on a real network; follow your network's security policy.
