Hello everyone! Today we learn how to set a default gateway on a Cisco Layer 2 switch. The lessons are in Khmer, and you can practice safely in Packet Tracer or on a private lab network.

Set a default gateway on a switch

A default gateway lets a Layer 2 switch send management traffic to other networks. The gateway is usually the router IP address on the same management network.

Example commands

Use the gateway address for your own network. This example assumes the switch already has a management IP address:

enable
configure terminal
ip default-gateway 192.168.1.1
end
copy running-config startup-config

Here, 192.168.1.1 is an example router address. Replace it with your router's address.

Tips

  • The gateway and the switch management IP must be in the same subnet.
  • Set the management IP on the correct VLAN interface for your network.
  • Use show running-config to check the gateway setting.
  • Test from the switch with ping to the gateway address.
  • On a Layer 3 switch with IP routing enabled, use a default route instead of ip default-gateway.
  • Practice in Packet Tracer or a private lab first.
