Basic setup
These example commands are for Cisco IOS switches. Command support can differ by model. Replace the example values with your own.
enable
configure terminal
hostname Switch1
ip domain-name example.local
username admin privilege 15 secret YOUR_STRONG_PASSWORD
crypto key generate rsa modulus 2048
ip ssh version 2
line vty 0 15
login local
transport input ssh
end
copy running-config startup-config
The switch also needs a working management IP address and network connection before you can connect to it. Set those for your lab environment.
Tips
- Practice in Packet Tracer or a private lab before using a real switch.
- Use a strong, unique password. Do not share it or put it in a public post.
- Use SSH, not Telnet, for remote management because SSH encrypts the connection.
- Allow SSH access only from trusted management devices or networks.
- Check your setup with
show ip sshandshow running-config. - If a command is not supported, check the guide for your switch model.
