Example commands
Make sure your device can reach the TFTP server. Then copy the running configuration:
enable
copy running-config tftp:
Follow the prompts. Enter the TFTP server IP address and a file name, for example switch-backup.cfg.
To back up the saved startup configuration instead, use:
copy startup-config tftp:
Tips
- Practice in a private lab before using a real network.
- Use a trusted TFTP server on a protected network. TFTP does not encrypt data.
- Configuration files may contain sensitive settings. Limit access to the server and backup files.
- Check the server IP address and network connection if the copy fails.
- Keep backups in a safe place and use clear file names with dates.
- Do not overwrite your only good backup until you check the new file.
