Hello my friend! In this lesson, we learn how to add information to a table with INSERT and read information with SELECT. The video shows these commands in SQL Server.
Example table
We use a Students table with an ID, a name, and an age:
CREATE TABLE Students (
StudentID INT PRIMARY KEY,
StudentName NVARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
Age INT
);
Insert data
Use INSERT INTO to add one or more rows. Name the columns so it is clear where each value goes:
INSERT INTO Students (StudentID, StudentName, Age)
VALUES
(1, N'Sokha', 20),
(2, N'Dara', 22);
In SQL Server, N'...' marks a Unicode text value. This is helpful for names in languages such as Khmer.
Select data
Use SELECT to read data from a table:
SELECT StudentID, StudentName, Age
FROM Students;
Use WHERE to return only rows that match a condition:
SELECT StudentName, Age
FROM Students
WHERE Age >= 21;
Use ORDER BY to sort the results:
SELECT StudentID, StudentName, Age
FROM Students
ORDER BY StudentName;
Watch the Video
This video shows how to insert data and select data from a table. The lesson is in Khmer.
Tips
- List the column names in every
INSERTstatement. - Match each value to the correct column and data type.
- Use
WHEREto filter the rows returned by a query. - Use
ORDER BYwhen you need results in a specific order; without it, row order is not guaranteed. - Try queries with test data before using important data.
