Hello my friend! ๐ Your internet package say 100 Mbps, but when you download file, browser show only 12 MB/s. Internet company cheat you? ๐ค No! Today we learn internet bandwidth unit โ bps, Kbps, Mbps, Gbps โ and how to convert. After this, you can calculate download time by yourself!
1. What Is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth is how much data can go through your internet connection in one second. Think about water pipe ๐ฐ: bigger pipe = more water flow each second.
Some word you need know:
- Bandwidth: Maximum data can send per second (size of pipe). This is number in your internet package.
- Speed / Throughput: Real data you get per second. Usually a bit less than bandwidth.
- Download: Data come to your computer (watch video, download file).
- Upload: Data go from your computer (send file, video call, live stream).
- Latency (Ping): Time for data go and come back, measure in millisecond (ms). Small number = better. Very important for game and video call.
2. Bandwidth Unit Table
Bandwidth always measure in bit per second (small b), not Byte.
| Unit | Short | Size | Real-life example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bit per second | bps | 1 bit/s | Very old modem |
| Kilobit per second | Kbps | 1,000 bps | Old dial-up internet (56 Kbps) |
| Megabit per second | Mbps | 1,000 Kbps | Home internet, 4G mobile |
| Gigabit per second | Gbps | 1,000 Mbps | Fiber internet, office LAN, 5G |
| Terabit per second | Tbps | 1,000 Gbps | ISP backbone, data center |
| Petabit per second | Pbps | 1,000 Tbps | Undersea internet cable total |
Good news: network unit always use 1,000, not 1,024. More easy than storage unit!
3. The Most Important: Mbps vs MB/s
This is where everybody confuse:
- Mbps (small b) = Megabit per second โ internet package, Wi-Fi, speed test
- MB/s (big B) = MegaByte per second โ download speed in browser, Steam, file copy
Because 1 Byte = 8 bit:
Mbps โ MB/s: divide by 8
MB/s โ Mbps: multiply by 8
100 Mbps รท 8 = 12.5 MB/s
10 MB/s ร 8 = 80 Mbps
So 100 Mbps package give you max about 12.5 MB/s download. Nobody cheat you! ๐
| Internet package | Max download speed |
|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 1.25 MB/s |
| 20 Mbps | 2.5 MB/s |
| 50 Mbps | 6.25 MB/s |
| 100 Mbps | 12.5 MB/s |
| 200 Mbps | 25 MB/s |
| 500 Mbps | 62.5 MB/s |
| 1 Gbps | 125 MB/s |
| 10 Gbps | 1,250 MB/s |
4. How to Convert โ Easy Method
Same rule like storage unit, but always 1,000:
- โฌ๏ธ Small unit โ Big unit: Divide รท 1,000
- โฌ๏ธ Big unit โ Small unit: Multiply ร 1,000
- ๐ bit โ Byte: รท 8 or ร 8
Example 1: Gbps โ Mbps
2.5 Gbps = 2.5 ร 1,000 = 2,500 Mbps
Example 2: Kbps โ Mbps
2,048 Kbps = 2,048 รท 1,000 = 2.048 Mbps
Example 3: Gbps โ MB/s (2 step)
1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps (ร 1,000)
1,000 Mbps รท 8 = 125 MB/s (รท 8)
Example 4: MB/s โ Mbps
Browser show download 6 MB/s. How many Mbps you really get?
6 MB/s ร 8 = 48 Mbps
Quick Conversion Table
| From โ To | Do this |
|---|---|
| Kbps โ Mbps | รท 1,000 |
| Mbps โ Gbps | รท 1,000 |
| Gbps โ Tbps | รท 1,000 |
| Gbps โ Mbps | ร 1,000 |
| Mbps โ Kbps | ร 1,000 |
| Mbps โ MB/s | รท 8 |
| MB/s โ Mbps | ร 8 |
| Gbps โ MB/s | ร 1,000 รท 8 (= ร 125) |
5. Calculate Download Time
Use this formula:
Time (second) = File size (MB) รท Speed (MB/s)
Remember change Mbps to MB/s first (รท 8)!
Example: Download 50 GB game with 200 Mbps internet
Step 1: File size โ 50 GB = 50,000 MB
Step 2: Speed โ 200 Mbps รท 8 = 25 MB/s
Step 3: Time โ 50,000 รท 25 = 2,000 second
Step 4: To minute โ 2,000 รท 60 โ 33 minute
How Long to Download 1 GB File?
| Internet speed | MB/s | Time for 1 GB |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 1.25 MB/s | โ 13 min 20 sec |
| 50 Mbps | 6.25 MB/s | โ 2 min 40 sec |
| 100 Mbps | 12.5 MB/s | โ 1 min 20 sec |
| 500 Mbps | 62.5 MB/s | โ 16 sec |
| 1 Gbps | 125 MB/s | โ 8 sec |
(This is best case. Real life a bit slower, because server, Wi-Fi, and other user share the line.)
How Much Data Use in 1 Hour?
If you download full speed for 1 hour with 100 Mbps:
12.5 MB/s ร 3,600 second = 45,000 MB = 45 GB
Good to know when you use mobile data with limit!
6. Common Network Speed
Cable (Ethernet)
| Name | Max speed | Cable |
|---|---|---|
| Fast Ethernet | 100 Mbps | Cat5 |
| Gigabit Ethernet | 1 Gbps | Cat5e, Cat6 |
| 2.5 Gigabit | 2.5 Gbps | Cat5e, Cat6 |
| 10 Gigabit | 10 Gbps | Cat6 (up to 55 m), Cat6a (up to 100 m) |
Wi-Fi (maximum in theory)
| Wi-Fi | Standard | Max speed |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 4 | 802.11n | 600 Mbps |
| Wi-Fi 5 | 802.11ac | 3.5 Gbps |
| Wi-Fi 6 / 6E | 802.11ax | 9.6 Gbps |
| Wi-Fi 7 | 802.11be | about 46 Gbps |
Real Wi-Fi speed is much lower than this โ wall, distance, and many device make it slow.
How Much Speed You Need? (about)
| Activity | Need about |
|---|---|
| Email, browse web | 1โ5 Mbps |
| Video call (HD) | 3โ5 Mbps |
| YouTube / Netflix HD (1080p) | 5 Mbps |
| 4K video | 15โ25 Mbps |
| Online game | 3โ10 Mbps (but low ping more important!) |
| Family with many device | 100 Mbps or more |
Ping (Latency)
| Ping | Quality |
|---|---|
| Below 20 ms | Excellent โ good for game |
| 20โ50 ms | Good |
| 50โ100 ms | OK for normal use |
| Over 100 ms | Lag, video call not smooth |
Tips
- Small b = bit (internet speed), big B = Byte (file size). Always check letter!
- To change Mbps to MB/s, divide by 8. To change MB/s to Mbps, multiply by 8.
- Network unit always use 1,000, never 1,024. Easy!
- Test your real speed at speedtest.net or fast.com. Test with cable, not Wi-Fi, to check what internet company really give.
- Your internet only fast as the slowest part. 1 Gbps package + old 100 Mbps cable or router = max 100 Mbps!
- For game and video call, low ping is more important than high Mbps.
- Check upload speed too, special if you do live stream, video call, or upload to cloud.
- In Windows, see your network link speed: Settings โ Network & internet โ Wi-Fi (or Ethernet) โ Hardware properties.
Conclusion
Now you understand bandwidth unit from bps until Tbps, and the big secret: divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s. You can calculate download time, choose right internet package, and know why 100 Mbps show 12.5 MB/s. Keep learning my friend! ๐ก
