Chapter 2 - Lab Safety Procedures Overview

1. Protecting People (Personal Safety Rules)

When you open computer case or fix hardware in lab, your safety is number ONE important!

  • Keep First-Aid Kit Ready : Always know where first-aid box is inside computer lab room.
  • Remove Jewelry & Metal Rings : Take off watch, ring, necklace before touching inside computer case (metal can conduct electricity and burn finger!).
  • No Food & No Drinks : Never bring water, coffee, or snacks near repair desk. If liquid spill inside computer, it cause short circuit and shock!
  • Electrical Safety : Always turn off power and unplug power cable before opening PC case. Be careful with hot parts around laser printers and AC power adapters!

⚠️ Safety Warning: Never open CRT monitors or Power Supply Unit (PSU) inside! They store super high voltage electricity even when unplugged from wall socket!

2. Protecting Equipment & Data

Computer hardware parts (especially CPU and RAM chips) are very sensitive to ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) static electricity from your hands!

  • ESD Protection : Use ESD wrist strap or touch unpainted metal computer case to discharge static electricity before touching electronic circuit board.
  • Temperature & Humidity : Keep computer lab room cool and clean. Too hot or too wet humidity will damage PC components.
  • Proper Disposal & SDS : Follow Safety Data Sheets (SDS) rules when throwing away old batteries, chemical cleaners, or monitor screens. Don't throw harmful chemicals in normal trash bin!

💡 Pro Tip: Always wear an ESD Anti-Static Wrist Strap connected to grounded PC case frame before touching RAM sticks or motherboard!

3. Proper Use of Computer Tools

A good technician uses correct tool for correct job:

  • Hand Tools : Screwdrivers (Phillips #1, #2), flathead, needle-nose pliers, wire cutters.
  • Cleaning Tools : Compressed air can, lint-free cloth, isopropyl alcohol (never use water to clean circuit boards!).
  • Diagnostic Tools : Multimeter for measure voltage, digital cable tester for LAN network cables.
  • Documentation & Reference : Keep repair journal notebook, write down steps when taking apart laptop, and check manufacturer manuals.

💡 Pro Tip for Technicians: Put small screws inside magnetic parts tray or pill organizer box so you never lose tiny screws when reassembling computer!
